AfricaThe forgotten continent...

A GREAT continent, full of resources and of wonderful places and people. Some countries richer than others and especially more poor than others! Africa is frequently forgotten by the rich countries and their rich people that think (media oblige) that all this geat continent is just filled by starving black people who are making civil wars and dictators here and there sucking all the small amout of richness their country produce. Although this latter is generally very often applicable, Africa stays a great continent full of great places to visit and great people!

I am proud to be an African!

Africa is a situated on part and other of the equator, limited in the east by the Indian Ocean and the Red sea, in the North by the Mediterranean sea, in the west by the Atlantic ocean and separated from Asia by the Suez Canal and from Europe by the Gibraltar Strait.

The main Islands are Madagascar, Zanzibar, Pemba, Maurice, La Réunion, the Seychelles and the Comores in the Indien Ocean. São Tomé, Príncipe, Annobon, Bioko and the Bissagos in the Guinea Golf and the Cap-Vert and anaries islands in the West. The total superficy is 30 330 000 km2, including 622 000 km2 of islands, Africa is the second largest continent on earth.

8 050 km from the top extremity, the cap Blanc, in Tunisia, to the lower extremity, the Aiguilles cap, in South Afriqua. The maximum lenght from the cap Vert, in Senegal, in the West to Ras Hafoun, in Somalia, East, represents about 7 560 km. The top mountain is the Kilimandjaro (5 895 m the Kibo mountain), in Tanzania. The lowest region is the salty depression of the Assal lake (153 m below the sea level), in Djibouti.

The total lenght of th coasts is 30 490 km. Africa is also generous by great rivers such as the Nil (the longest river on the globe), Niger, Congo, Zambeze. Africa has rocks dating from the Precamberian erea from 3.2 billion of years. The Sahara, the greatest desert in the world is extended from the Atlantic to the Red Sea.

Please relax and enjoy the ride to AFRICA!
TunisiaMy country!!!

I’ve been in many countries around the world, and met so many different people from different places. One of the very first questions every body asked me, was “where are you from?”. I always answered that I am from TUNISIA and from CROATIA.

While some people knew where was Croatia, only few knew about Tunisia. I always answered the same answer: It is a good occasion to revise your geography homework!

Well, Tunisia is in AFRICA! It is a small country between Algeria and Lybia. It is a pure Mediterranean country!

It’s superficy is 164.418 Km2 with a long sea shore of 1150 Km, the Atlas mountains (highest pick is 1529m) and a peace of the Sahara desert in the south (almost 40% of the country surface). Its capital is Tunis. It has obtained the independence from France colonisation in 1956. The official language is ARABIC but Frensh is spoken by almost every body. The other secondary languages are Italian, English, German and others. It has a population of almost 10 millions people (in year 2002) with a density of 60 people/Km2. It is composed of over 98% of Muslims (Sunnite malekites and Hanafites) and the rest are Jewish, Christians Catholics and others.

Tunisia is a very pacific country, with a very mild international political attitude, and always trying to have a fare attitude toward every part. A very “special” democracy was instored since 1987 with the arrival of our actual president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. Many changes has occurred since, with a very notable economy progress, "security" and stability. I must stop talking about the delicate subject of internal politics… but for sure, Tunisia is a very interesting sight seeing place! Tourists from all over the world travel to visit the very beautiful places all over the country. There are really many places that you can really enjoy!! It is a secure and safe place to go!!!! Autochthons are friendly and are used to welcome tourists! Please do not worry, you will be safe in that country! No matter if the officials of your country place Tunisia in a list among other “please do not go” country, I am confident that Tunisia is SAFE for tourists!!

Also, Tunisia benefits of a very wide cultural patrimony. Is the most ancient political entity of the Maghreb countries. With an over 7000 years of history, including Caspians, Phenicians, Carthago, Romans, Byzantines, Vandals, Berbers, Arabo-muslims conquerors, Spanish, Ottomans, Jewish and many others. There are plenty ruins here and there that you might want to visit. CARTHAGE was the center of the Mediterranean economy and ruled until Rome invaded Carthage and stayed there after 3 punic wars for over 400 years.

I’ve been all over the country, in land and in the waters, here are some of the pictures that I took! Enjoy, and if you have ant y questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me (surfing@surfingcarpet.com)!

CroatiaMy Country! Even though I am still waiting for my rights to have the official papers done (since over 10 years now!), but IT IS MY COUNTRY!

***********************UPDATE!************************
I finally got my Croatian Passport and Citizenship!
It lasted 14 years since I asked it after Croatia took its independence, But I finally got my right.
******************************************************

Well, Croatia is just a paradise on earth! It is located in the Balkans in the Occidental Europe! It is a small country between Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is also a pure Mediterranean country! Its capital is Zagreb. It’s superficy is 56.510 Km2 with a long Adriatic sea shore (5790 Km including its over 1000 islands in the Adriatic sea), Dalmatians mountains and a lot of very beautiful forests and nature. The official language is Croatian but many people can speak different languages like Italian, English, Slovenian, Serbian, German, Russian or Hungarian. It has a population of 4.4 millions people (in 2002) with a density of 78 people/Km2. It is composed of 86% of Roman Catholics and the rest are orthodox, Muslims, Jewish's and others. Croatia took its independence in 1995 from Yugoslavia after a very bloody civil war against Serbia and Montenegro that lasted for 5 years. Today, Croatia is one of the best destinations to go in Europe, with a reputation of its very beautiful Adriatic sea sandy beaches and islands. Croatia is a very interesting sight seeing place!

Also, Croatia has an over 3000 years of history, including a lot of Roman ruins, and Zagreb has a very beautiful architecture, similar to Vienna (Austria) because built by the same architects from the Austro-Hungarian Empire that it belonged.

I’ve been in many cities around Croatia, including Zagreb, Delnice, Riyeka (Rijeca), Ogulin, Pula, Punat, Kerk island, Dubrovnic, and many others, but all this was before I got a digital camera. I could not go more recently, first, because I need a visa to visit my own country, second, because I had no TIME and very limited holidays in the last 6 years... The pictures I present here are the ones that my Mom took with her digital camera during her last visit to Croatia. I will present more pictures and promote more my country Croatia once I go there, means once I will get my rights to go there without having to ask and pay for a visa!

USAA great country.

My experience here so far is that the people are great! Very friendly and nice.

I am currently living in Atlanta Georgia. Atlanta is the capital of Georgia. Georgia is located in the south east of the USA. It has a superficy of 152 589 km2 and a population of 6 478 216 habitants (in 1990). Georgia played a very important role in the secession war, representing the south, and now is one of the most important financial and historic points of the south east USA. Typical Georgians seem to be very friendly. A superficial “friendship” but for sure they are very polite! Savannah is one of the oldest cities in Georgia, with very interesting sight seeing places, but Atlanta remains the main attractive visiting point of the state of Georgia. So many museums, natural parks and places to visit!!

So many things to visit in Atlanta, including the Atlanta Aquarium, the biggest aquarium in the world! The Fernbank Museum, The Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Zoo of Atlanta, the Atlanta Art Museum, The Jimmy Carter Center, the Martin Luther King Jr Center, and so many festivals and manifestations crossing all over the year! Night Life in Atlanta is also great. A bit dangerous if you are alone, but fun places to go!

I went in many festivals and places around. I actually live in a very beautiful place! Here are just some pictures I took here and there. Please enjoy!

Also included pictures from Boston, Chicago, San Diego, Philadelphia, Florida and so on...

AsiaHuge continet with its magic places to visit
JapanJapan is composed of 4 main islands, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. These islands are surrounded by different seas belonging to the Pacific ocean. It’s superficy is 377.837 Km2 full of volcanic mountains and very beautiful forests, typical Japanese type cities and nature. The official language is Japanese and many Japanese can understand English except that it is hard for them to speak this language that is very difficult for them to practice because they are shy and they have a very limited phonetic pronunciation database. The population is of 127 millions of people (in 2002) with a density of 336 per Km2 (except for the big cities agglomerations). Around 45% of the population are concentrated in the Tokyo-Yokohama-Chiba-Kawasaki and Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto and Nagoya areas. The Tokyo agglomeration contain over 30 million of people, the most dense metropolis in the world. The official religions are Shinto (veneration of ancestors and nature) married with Buddhist. These two religions are very friendly and works together (we find same temples having Shinto and Buddhist monks). Generally, celebration ceremonies for birth, marriage and passage to adult ages are more Shinto, whereas the celebrations for death and ancestors are more Buddhist. We can always say grossly that “a Japanese is born Shinto and is dead Buddhist”. Japanese politics are still under a very strong American dominancy since the atomic bombs but that doesn’t seem to bother either the population or the politicians. At least that is what I noticed during my stay in that country! Usual Japanese people are just in admiration toward Americans.

There is so many things to visit and to try in Japan, including FOOD, the technology, the nice sight seeing places, the Karaoke, the clubs, the ancient castles, the ruins, the shops, the gardens, the contrast between civilization and tradition, the lost in translation, and so many others! Beside it’s very expensive everything, if you don’t care about money, or if you work there, you really will enjoy your stay there, with a “every day something new” basis!!

History is not something you will miss in that country, since it has a very rich history, with a 8000 years of history, including civil wars, invasions and conquests! So many things to see!!!

I’ve been in many places around Japan, like Tokyo and surroundings, Osaka, Chikoku island, Niigata, Okayama, and Okinawa island. I hope you will enjoy these pictures that I took and if you have a chance to visit Japan, please do not hesitate, it is a very “must see” country!
